This year's York-Poquoson Extension 4-H Mums Project was a success! Twelve youth people participated in the program. Each participant received 20 mums in May and was taught how to care for them throughout the summer. All 12 completed the program and sold their product at the Yorktown Market Days. While selling their product at Market Days, the kids learned to interact with the public and even helped sell each other's mums!
The combined earnings for all participants were $1,600. Several of the participants plan to donate a portion of their earnings to charity.
For more information about the 4-H Mums project, call the York-Poquoson Extension Office at 890-4940.

Attention Parents! Are you looking for inexpensive and exciting family entertainment for a Friday night? Or, do you need a safe, wholesome place for the kids to get some exercise while you enjoy a two-hour date? Then consider joining the fun at York County's "Skate, Rattle and Roll" ("SR&R") sessions at Dare Elementary School Gymnasium, 300 Dare Road (23692). This award winning program dates back to the 70s. Beginners and pros alike will enjoy skating under sparkling colored lights to popular music provided by a disc jockey. And, the program features general skating, special games and contests, and opportunity to socialize with family and friends.
The "Elementary School/Family Skate Session" runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with the doors opening at 6:20. Parents are always encouraged to participate, but if you dropping off your older elementary students, you must come inside to check in your children with our staff. The "Middle School Skate Session" for students in grades 6-8 runs from 9 to 11 p.m. with the doors opening at 8:50. Parents are free to stay and relax in our concessions room or, after checking in their middle schoolers, can enjoy a "late date" together until picking up their children at 11.
Admission for either session is $5.00 per skater and includes skate rental. Roller Blade rental costs an additional $3.00. Concessions are available for purchase.
Upcoming special events at SR&R include our "Holiday Glow Skate" on Friday, December 21, and "Happy New Year's Glow Skate" on Friday, January 11.
So come on out on Friday Nights and experience an evening of good fellowship and fun with friends and family at Skate Rattle & Roll!
NOTE: Skate Rattle & Roll will be CLOSED on Friday, November 23, and Friday, December 28, for the holidays.
