New Quarter Park invites musicians and music lovers to share old-time, blues, roots music and more on Thursday evening, Aug. 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and watch the full moon rise at 7 p.m.
Bring a guitar, fiddle, or other acoustic instrument to the park shelters next to the parking lot and office and join in the jam. Instrumentalists at all levels and in all genres are welcome. Music-loving listeners are also welcome to bring a lawn chair and sing along.
Led by local musician Joe Duggan, the event proceeds in a round robin fashion. The final Moonlight and Music night this season will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, when the full moon rises at 6 p.m.
New Quarter Park is located in upper York County at 1000 Lakeshead Drive near the Queens Lake neighborhood. From the Colonial Parkway, exit at Queens Lake, turn right, and then turn on Lakeshead Drive and follow the signs to the park. From Interstate 64, take exit 242, Route 199, toward Jamestown, and then exit onto Route 143 West. Travel to the first stop light at Penniman Road and turn right. Turn left on Hubbard Lane and travel to Lakeshead Drive. Turn right and follow the signs to the park.

The York County Planning Commission will hold a work session at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16 for the purpose of discussing the Comprehensive Plan review and update.
The work session will take place in the York Hall East Room, located at 301 Main Street, Yorktown. The main topic of the meeting will be the housing element of the plan.
The Comprehensive Plan serves as the long-range plan for the physical development of the county. The Code of Virginia requires that comprehensive plans be reviewed periodically, and York County's plan was last updated by the Board of Supervisors in December 2005.
All Planning Commission meetings and work sessions are open to the public.

The York County Historical Committee, in cooperation with the York County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, is proud to present the fourth lecture in its York County Civil War Lecture Series.
The presentation, "The Halfway House in Tabb During the Civil War," will be held in the Board Room of York Hall, 301 Main Street, Yorktown, on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. The speaker is local historian Robert Carol Emerson.
Over the last 18 years, Mr. Emerson researched the history of the Tabb community of York County, with some of the data being published in various newspaper articles. Recently, Mr. Emerson combined these articles with other unpublished information in a book titled, "Tabb in Retrospect." The chapters on the Halfway House and the Civil War form the core of the book and the basis of Mr. Emerson's presentation, which is free and open to the public.
Four more lectures remain in the series:
-- Sept. 16, 2012 – "Union Army Census of the Colored Population of York County, March 1865." Local historian and retired York County educator, Russell Hopson, will follow some of the contraband families as they began new chapters in their lives after the Civil War. Mr. Hopson is a long-time supporter of and speaker at numerous York County Black History Celebrations.
-- Oct. 21, 2012 – "Medical Problems on the Peninsula." Author, historian and historical interpreter, T. A. "Doc" Wheat, will talk about the Confederate troops who initially defended Yorktown and the "deadly enemy" they encountered (and it wasn't the Yankees).
-- Nov. 4, 2012 - A Prelude to "Kiss My Little Girls – 1861." Jeff Toalson, historian and author of three Civil War-era books, will provide some special insights into his research and how he came to know the intriguing story of Richard and Mary Watkins. Richard Watkins, Prince Edward County lawyer and former Confederate cavalry captain (portrayed by Mr. Toalson), will join us for a visit on the front porch and recall stories of the conflict. Mr. Toalson will capture your interest and prepare you for the upcoming performances of one of his most popular works.
-- Dec. 16, 2012 – "The Civil War - A Woman's Cause." Local historian and historical interpreter Sharleen Leigh West-Carr will provide insight into the role of women during the war. Ms. West-Carr is currently the chairman of the North-South Skirmish Association Costume Committee and makes Civil War period clothing.
