Board seeks applicants for the Senior Center Board

     The York County Board of Supervisors is currently seeking applications from county citizens interested in serving on the York County Senior Center Board. 
     The Senior Center Board serves to identify programs and activities, raise funds, and provide support for county operations of the Senior Center of York.
     The Senior Center Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Senior Center, located at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown.
     York County citizens interested in applying for appointment to the York County Senior Center Board may obtain an application at the Senior Center, at the County Administrator's Office at 224 Ballard Street in Yorktown, or by calling 890-3320. Applications may also be obtained and filed by visiting www.yorkcounty.gov, clicking on On-Line Services, and clicking on Board Bank Application.

Board seeks applicants for the Board of Zoning/Subdivision Appeals

     The York County Board of Supervisors is currently seeking applications from county citizens interested in serving on the York County Board of Zoning/Subdivision Appeals. Based on submitted applications, the Board will make a recommendation to the Judge of the Circuit Court, who makes the appointments to the Board of Zoning/Subdivision Appeals.
     The Board of Zoning/Subdivision Appeals protects public and private property, wildlife, marine fisheries, and the natural environment through preservation of county tidal wetlands. The Board issues wetlands permits, enforces the York County Wetlands Ordinance, and promotes the proper use and protection of wetland areas.
    The Board of Zoning/Subdivision Appeals meets the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in York Hall in Yorktown.
     York County citizens interested in applying for appointment to the York County Wetlands Board may obtain an application at the County Administrator's Office at 224 Ballard Street in Yorktown, or by calling 890-3320. Applications may also be obtained and filed by visiting www.yorkcounty.gov, clicking on On-Line Services, and clicking on Board Bank Application.

County to launch online Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List

     The Virginia Housing Development Authority and York County Division of Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization will launch an online Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List Application on July 19, 2012. 
     The program will take applications, online only, from 9 a.m. until noon on July 19 at vhda.apply4housing.com. York County Housing administers the voucher program in York County and the City of Poquoson. Anyone may apply, but those applicants that live/work in York and Poquoson are placed on the waiting list ahead of those who do not. The program also gives a local preference to homeless applicants.
     The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally-funded program that provides housing assistance to eligible, very low and extremely low income persons/families by subsidizing a portion of their rent.
     The new online application allows applicants to apply at their convenience from any computer with internet access, but only during the time period that applications will be accepted. Applicants submitting their application will receive a confirmation number upon completion. The form consists of less than 20 questions. Anyone can apply on behalf of another applicant.

Senior Center Announces July Programs

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in July.

Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age.  The center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 Geoege Washington Memorial Highway (Rt. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The center is closed all county holidays.

Reservations are required for all sesions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  To register, stop by the center or call 898-3807.  For more information, please visit www.yorkcounty.gov/communityservices.
 
Pre 4th of July Picnic Celebration, Tuesday, July 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Enjoy good friends and good food at the Senior Center as we celebrate the 4th of July. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverage. The cost is $2. Feel free to call the center at 898-3807 to see if space is available for this event.
 
Senior Center CLOSED July 4. In observance of Independence Day, the Senior Center of York will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.
 
Post July 4th Patriotic Surprise, Tuesday, July 10 at 1 p.m. This event will include activities about Independence Day. Fun, food, music, games, and a chance to win a prize. Please register by July 9.
 
Scrapbooking & Spring Greeting Cards, Monday, July 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful cards and assists you with your scrapbook. You can also enjoy using the Cricut which helps to design your cards. These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for your loved ones. Note: Please limit to four cards.  
 
AARP Driver Safety Program, July 16 & July 17. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, July 16 from 12:30 – 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, July 17 from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members.Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
 
York-Poquoson Triad 8th Anniversary Ice Cream Social, Wednesday July 18 at 1 p.m. The purpose of Triad is to educate seniors on crime issues such as fraud, scams and identity theft. Our guest speaker will be Randy Davis, Community Outreach Coordinator with the Virginia Office of the Attorney General. In addition to receiving helpful information we also plan to have lots of fun together! Summertime is "vacation time" when as tourists we sometimes wear those brighter, louder clothes than we normally do. So come dressed for a "Tacky Tourist" inspired theme to our celebration by coming in your wackiest tourist attire and compete with others for prizes. There will also be cool ice cream treats compliments of Ben and Jerry's as well as door prizes. To register, call 898-3807 by July 13.
 
July Birthday Bash, Friday, July 20 at 1 p.m. Come listen to "Music by Jon Durfee."Banjo player Jon Durfee will perform your favorites of the 50's and 60's as well as some Broadway hits. Be sure to come for this exciting sing-a-long. Cake and beverage will be served. Remember you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to attend. June and July birthdays will be recognized at this bash.
                   
Health Day, "Tips to Manage Chronic Diseases" Wednesday, July 25 at 12:45 p.m. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease account for more than 70% of all deaths in the U.S. and are among the most common and costly health problems. The good news is that they are also among the most preventable health issues and can usually be effectively controlled. Join Sherry Massie (RN, BSN, CCP) with Chronic Disease Prevention at the Peninsula Health District as she shares valuable information on how to better manage chronic illnesses.To register call the Senior Center at 898-3807 by July 23.
           
Computer General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk.

July 4 general parking and handicapped/special needs parking

     Public parking for the Yorktown Fourth of July Celebration will be on the Yorktown Battlefield at the intersection of Cook Road and Ballard Streets. 
     Event Parking for the evening activities is free and available beginning at 4 p.m. Visitors should be prepared to walk approximately one mile from the Battlefield Parking area to the Yorktown waterfront to attend the events. 
     The Yorktown Trolley will provide the only means of public transportation in Yorktown on July 4. The trolley will operate on a route that includes stops at the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center, the York-Poquoson Courts and Office Complex, the York County Administration Building, the intersection of Main and Ballard Streets, Riverwalk Landing, Watermen's Museum and the Yorktown Victory Center. Service begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. The Yorktown Trolley is handicapped accessible and free.
     A special parking area and shuttle service for handicapped and special needs visitors will be available at Yorktown Middle School, 11201 George Washington Memorial Highway, (Route 17 and Goosely Road). 
Special needs transportation is being provided to the handicapped/special needs person and one escort for each individual. Due to limited shuttle capacity, all other individuals in the party need to take a separate vehicle and park in the event parking at the corner of Ballard Street and Cook Road. 
     Due to high traffic volume, drop offs are not permitted in Yorktown or at the Yorktown Middle School special needs parking area. Vehicles transporting handicapped/special needs persons to Yorktown Middle School must be parked at the school. Each person will be issued a pass and must have the pass to return on the shuttle at the end of the evening. The shuttle will drop off and pick up handicapped/special needs individuals at the Yorktown Waterfront approximately 200 yards from the performance area. 
     Operating hours for the handicapped/special needs check-in station at Yorktown Middle School on July 4 are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Shuttle services will be available from the handicapped/special needs parking area to the Yorktown Waterfront from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Shuttles will return from the Yorktown Waterfront to Yorktown Middle School from 9:45 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Parking and shuttle services are free.

County offices will be closed July 4; Arrive early for July 4 fireworks and evening activities

 

County offices to close July 4 in observance of Independence Day

     The following York County courts and offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day:

     Recycling pick-up scheduled for Wednesday, July 4, will be picked up on Saturday, July 7. Garbage pick up from Wednesday, July 4, to the end of the week will be delayed one day, so Wednesday's pick ups will be on Thursday, Thursday's on Friday, and Friday's on Saturday.

Arrive early for July 4th fireworks and evening activities

     The 33rd annual Yorktown Fourth of July fireworks display promises to light up the sky over the York River beginning at 9:15 p.m. 
     The best viewing area is along the Yorktown waterfront. The Beach Picnic Area will be open to the public but not to vehicular traffic on July 4. Please note that the Victory Monument area will NOT be available as a viewing area, to host a concert or offering concessions this year. All activities will take place along the Yorktown waterfront. 
     Visitors are urged to arrive in Yorktown before 6 p.m. for the fireworks show due to heavy traffic volumes. Once the parking area has reached capacity, the entire town will be closed to vehicular traffic.
     In addition to several Yorktown restaurants, food concessions will be offered along the Yorktown Waterfront on Chischiak Green by D.A.R.E. from 4:30 to 10 p.m.   
     Visitors arriving early for the fireworks show are encouraged to enjoy the following activities:
 
- 4 p.m.: Event Parking opens Corner of Cook Road and Ballard Street
- 4:30 p.m.: Food Concessions by D.A.R.E open at Chischiak Green
- 7 p.m.: Sounds of Liberty Bell Ringing Ceremony - Riverwalk Landing Stage
- 8 p.m.: Glen Boswick and the Sounds of Swing Orchestra - Riverwalk Landing Stage
- 9:15 p.m.: Spectacular Fireworks Display over the York River
- 9:45 p.m.: Glen Boswick and the Sounds of Swing Orchestra - Riverwalk Landing Stage
 
     Due to the large crowd expected for this event, the use of barbecue grills in Yorktown on July 4 is prohibited. Visitors are also reminded that the public consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
