D.A.R.E. festival weekend to be held March 2-3

The York–Poquoson Sheriff's Office D.A.R.E. Program announces a D.A.R.E. festival weekend to be held March 2-3 at Grafton School Complex, 403 Grafton Drive, Yorktown. 
 
The festivities begin with a Countywide Middle School Dance and Activities Night on Friday, March 2,from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All York County 6th, 7th and 8th graders are invited to attend. There will be an entry fee of $7. Activities will include a Joust Arena, Moonwalk, Inflatable Slide, Obstacle Course and Games. DJ Services will provide dance music and concessions will be available for purchase.  
 
Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the Annual D.A.R.E./Fire Festival and Health Fair. This festival is a drug-free community event featuring games, concessions, rides, face painting and a variety of children's activities. There also will be exhibits and demonstrations from public safety, county departments, health service organizations and local law enforcement offices. A $5 wristband for rides will be sold, as well as, tickets for games, popcorn, and cotton candy. A variety of concessions will also be for sale provided by Aramark School Support Services.

Horticultural Extravaganza to be held March 10

The York County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering its Horticultural Extravaganza on Sat­urday, March 10, from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tabb High School.
 
This day-long event presents a choice of over 15 horticul­tural topics to choose from, for both the novice and advanced gardener. Registration fee is $16, which includes lunch. Visit www.yorkcounty.gov/vce for registration materials, or call 757-890-4940.

Free youth lawn mowing class hosted by the Cooperative Extension

The York County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension is again offering its award-winning class on lawn mowing designed for youth ages 10 through 17. 
 
This course meets for four consecutive Tuesday nights in March, beginning March 6, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at St. Luke's Methodist Church on Ella Taylor Road in York County. Students living outside of York County are welcome to enroll, but first priority is given to York County residents.
 
This fun and informative course teaches lawn mower safety and maintenance, lawn care basics, cutting techniques, and ideas on how to start and run a successful lawn mowing business.
 
This course has won national recognition as an outstanding county program offered to its citizens. Enrollment is limited. Please visit www.yorkcounty.gov for registration information or contact the York County Extension Office at 890-4940 or ex199@vt.edu.

Cooperative Extension to host free pruning clinic on March 3

The York County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension will sponsor a free pruning clinic Saturday, March 3.
 
The clinic will be held in the Seaford area of York County from 1 – 3 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Upon registration, the clinic address will be given, along with directions to the site.
 
To register, email ex199@vt.edu or call the Extension office at 890-4940. Space is limited and there is a registration deadline of Feb. 29, or until filled.
